Kumasi is in the Ashanti Region and is a land of rich ancient history. Popularly called the " Garden City because of its tree-lined streets and public flower gardens, it is a special attraction for tourists because of its martial history and culture of the gold trade.
One can reach Kumasi from Accra and other cities by air or by road. Some of the tourists attractions include the Cultural Centre which is a museum of Ashanti royalty and history, where you will see royal paraphernalia crafted in gold and also the Golden Stool which caused the war between the Ashanti's and Denkyira Lords. The museum is open from 8.00am-5.00pm from Tuesday-Friday.
The Okomfo Anokye sword site is behind the Okomfo Anokye Hospital, there, one will find the Okomfo Anokye Sword. Legend has it that as a high priest of the Akan kingdom, he drove the sword into the ground with such force that it remained there ever since.
The Manhyia Palace has been the residence of the the Kings of the Ashanti since 1924. The palace consists of the old palace, new palace, the King's courts, the queen mother's Palace, and an Insitute of Ashanti studies. Once in every six weeks, there is the Adae festival at the Palace when the King turns out in all his regalia.
